Celebrating Dr. Shayne Futujma: November 2024 Employee of the Month 

We’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on Dr. Shayne Futujma, a Grant Coordinator with Academic Engagement, who has truly set the bar high for dedication, innovation, and care. 

Dr. Futujma’s story as a Bobcat alumna is one of resilience and perseverance. Having faced her own challenges transitioning during her first year, she now channels those experiences into her work, empowering students to bounce back from academic difficulties. Shayne’s genuine care, positive energy, and commitment to advocacy make her a beacon of support for both students and colleagues alike. 

Going Above and Beyond 
Dr. Futujma has a remarkable ability to think creatively and act collaboratively to enhance the academic experience for everyone around her. Here are just a few examples of her outstanding contributions: 

  • Building Connections: With Academic Engagement being a newer department, Shayne introduced a “Get to Know Me” page, fostering a sense of camaraderie and connection among her team. Her cheerful demeanor brightens the halls of Commons, making everyone feel welcomed. 
  • Innovating Support Resources: Over the summer, Shayne led efforts to develop the Academic Learning Support website, an invaluable tool that compiles learning resources for courses with high DFW rates. This easy-to-navigate site has become a lifeline for students seeking academic assistance. 
  • Championing Financial Guidance: Shayne recently stepped up to meet with students facing financial difficulties. Her empathetic and solution-oriented approach ensured that these Bobcats not only felt supported but also gained a clear path forward to stay enrolled at Texas State. 

Leading Initiatives for Success 

This past fall, Dr. Futujma took on coordinating the B3 Strategies for Success Webinar series, which brourght together campus experts to share critical college knowledge with students. She’s also developing a cross-division support network to better assist students navigating academic challenges, showcasing her dedication to student and professional growth. 

A Quick Q&A with Dr. Futujma

We had the chance to ask Dr. Futujma a few questions about her work and passions: 

What do you enjoy most about working at Texas State? 

 “I am a Texas State alumni, so Texas State is my home! What I enjoy most about working at Texas State is the ability to collaborate and work along side an amazing campus full of administrators, faculty, and staff who have the same passion for student success in higher education that I do. Everyday is something new and we always rise to the challenge!” 

What advice would you give to someone just starting at the university? 

 “Your bobcat family is here to support you, so never be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance”. Texas State is a welcoming, supportive, community full of so many wonderful people, who not only bring with them a wealth of experience and knowledge, but also unique stories and perspectives.” 

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? 

 “In my spare time, I love to read! I enjoy curling up with a good mystery book, especially ones that include a cat. I am currently reading “Hiss Me Deadly” by Miranda James, which is part of the Cat in the Stacks mystery series. I also enjoy pop culture trivia, classic movies, and spending time with family and friends.”
